Let's start!
I'm Ryan Gerard Mabeza RN aka Rai
23 y/o
from Lagro, Q.C.
Been cubing for 3 - 4 mos? (not quite sure)
and I'm a registered nurse, currently studying for NCLEX
my fastest time: 1:23:08 (WTF!)
(30 sec. na po! Lucky... 44 sec. Non-lucky)
nabasa ko kasi yung i exist ni Erika Gomez kaya na-inspire na din ako gumawa nito...
What got me into cubing....
1st time I held one:
I was visiting a friend of my uncle one time way back when I was 8 y/o (mga 15 years ago na) somewhere in QC (really cant remember where) and he has this really cool twisty thingy on his dining table. (magdidinner kasi kami nun) Sabi ko, "Kuya, pede palaro neto?" pumayag naman siya..
Then they talked about it na, siyempre, payabangan sila nun. I heard them say na "Rubik's Cube" pala yung nilalaro ko. Aun, sabi ko sa sarili ko, Rubiks pala tawag dito... (Oo, akala ko one word "rubiks" hindi "rubik's"... hehe) I remembered them talking about a cheat how to instantly solve it by unlocking a "SECRET" piece then you can disassemble it and reassemble it when nobody's looking...
Sabi ko naman, "Pano kuya?" Aun, nagdahilan yung mokong, nakalimutan na daw nya! Nyahaha!
Eh since O.P. ako nun kasi usapang matatanda yun (they were college students pa at that time) I started playing with the da*n thing...
I don't know how I did it pero I started solving it and I left the last layer unsolved. Syempre wala pa akong malay sa mga existing algos pero aun. Nagulat sila sabi nga nung may-ari nung cube "aba, henyo pala tong pamangkin mo ah..."
I later took an I.Q. test (yung nabibili pa sa NBS nun), and I scored 140.
Hehehe... tsamba!
After 10 years... (actually, more than 10 years...)
I always see 3x3 cubes around the metro because I like travelling and malling a lot, and whenever I see one, I can't help remembering that incident... Pero I never bought one, coz all I see are those bangketa and imitation cubes and I thought that it'd be a waste of money kung mahirap din naman ikutin...
Then around February of 2008...
My sister was so into a new fad in their school. (Ganun kasi siya, sobra ma-adik pag uso, pag wala na, parang walang nangyari...) sabi nya" kuya, kuya, ang gagaling ng mga classmate ko, ambilis bumuo ng Rubik's cube!"
tapos BOOM! (may effects?!)
RUBIK'S CUBE matagal ko na ring hindi naririnig ang dalawang salita na yan na binigkas muli,pagkalipas ng maraming taon!
Turns out, much like Erika's story, someone started solving and it spread like wildfire in their high school... Syempre, since uso nga, sinubukan din matuto ng sister ko, nagpabili pa nga siya ng bangketa cube sa mom ko... siyempre ako naman di patatalo, binida ko sa kanya yung kwento ko nung kabataan ko... un nga lang, one-time performance lang pala yun, di ko na maulit. My GF and I were strolling around in Robinson's Galleria near Tom's World at the top floor. Aun, videoke, arcade etc... Then nung pauwi na, nakita ko yung Toys R us dun (correct me if I'm wrong). dahil may pagkaisip-bata nga ako, niyaya ko siya dun.
To my amazement, may original Rubik's cube dun na shrink wrap. Tapos ang mura pa, Php 219.00 lang (unlike now na 249.00 na)
Sabi ko, "Syet, meron pala nito dito??!!" Meron pang 2x2, 3x3 keychain saka DIY na 3x3.
I went home smiling like a little kid.
Naawa nga ako kasi 3 weeks yan nakatiwangwang sa room ko coz I got hired at a Call Center for the mean time kaya mejo busy ang lolo mo.
(don't ask me why I applied there, long story)

Tapos, may co-trainee ako dun na nurse din, tapos sa kwentuhan namin, nabanggit nya na marunong daw sya mag-solve. Dinala ko kinabukasan yung nilalangaw kong cube.
Nagulat ako! na-solve nya yung F2L nang ganun-ganun na lang! (LBL ginawa nya) Di man lang sya pinawisan!
Sabi ko, "anak ng ..... sa bahay ga-munggo pawis ko sa pagsolve neto tapos sya nakangiti pa!"
Di nga lang nya nasolve yung yung Last Layer dahil nakalimutan na daw nya ung algos...
2 buwan nakalipas...
3 mos. lang ako nag-stay dun for reasons known only to me and naging official tambay ako.... since binili ko tong cube ko, never ko pa to na-solve ah.. kakahiya... (I told myself) kaya I started to browse the net.

Una kong nahanap yung videos ni Pogobat aka Dan Brown. I watched all his videos about cubing and wrote down all his algos on a sheet of paper and watched his vids again and again. It took me one full day to understand all these gibberish and one hot afternoon, nasolve ko siya! (napasigaw talaga ako ng malakas at akala talga ng mom ko nanalo ako sa lotto. swear. ganun kalakas!) May picture pa nga ako bilang evidence... (Jologs ba?)
I used his method for quite a while, unfortunately I can only play with it for about an hour coz I was studying nga.
For 2 weeks, I could solve it at around 5 mins, then 3, then 2 mins...
(Wala pa akong kamalay-malay nun sa LBL, F2L, Fridrich, Fingertricks...)
Tinuruan ko pa nga ung friend ko nun... As of last week, sub 3 mins. na daw siya... (niyabangan pa ko sa txt)
Last week
I got tired of his method and I figured out na meron pa sigurong ibang method na noob friendly. I encountered diff. methods across the web pero ang hirap intindihin.. (Search Lars Petrus' page, you'll see what I mean)
Then I encountered a Canadian speedcuber's page on YouTube named badmephisto. I really recommend noobs like me to learn his method!
Now.
I'm learning intuitive F2L right now and badmephisto's 2 Look OLL and PLL methods. (Yep, I'm doing that at the same time. Fast learner naman daw ako e.)
I haven't timed myself for a week now pero since I'm still learning, sub 2 mins pa rin... (Sub 55 na po!)

I went to Divi nga kanina to look for DS cubes.
Mejo nahirapan ako kasi may naghahakot daw ng rubik's cube dun! wahahaha!
Nakahanap naman ako.. hehe...

just went to Rob TRU near Taft asking for the same thing but unfortunately,
they're not getting any new stocks of DIY cubes for quite a while...
puro same 3x3 shrink, 2x2 and keychains lang daw dinedeliver...

oo naman! tagal ko nang balak gumawa nito pero the second time I read yours,
sinipag na talaga ako kahit around 2 am in the morning ko ginawa yan...
oo nga, mas maganda kung mejo may konting detalye yung mga i exist, mas makikilala natin mga cuber...
i hope I have time to go to cubemeets... weekends lang kasi freetime ko to meet up with friends and family stuff...
