eeww. anime-geek.
explain mo nga ano difference nung dalawa. enlighten me.
Re: Boy dies imitating Naruto
Cartoon:
- usually drawn with thick outlines
- shapes of their heads are rather different from one another
- usually contains filler episodes contains no specific storyline of what so ever
- kiddy moral lessons
- less fandom
- targets more of the children rather than teens
- no where cooler than anime
Anime:
- standardized drawing
- starts with the traditional manga
- episodes with great storylines which leads to empowering endings
- considered already a type of art for most people (since it's quite complicated to draw one compared to drawng a cartoon)
- represents present state of society occurred around the world or specifically in Japan and soon explained on how to resolve such during the ending of each series
- character designs are unique and hard to draw
- fanfictions are more abundant compared to toons
- explains present society issues like old literature
- either teen or children are attracted to such
there enlightened already?
SO i therefore conclude that the anime's content OWNS toon content. Therefore making anime the better type of show.
as for the kid who died is pretty much was his choice to imitate...
things like super grover (sesame street) were done by kids before (the whole flying thing) therefore injuring quite a population also teletubies suddenly increased gay population explained through statistics after a couple of months teletubies were released
anime in the other hand is a source of inspiration. Death Note could inspire changing the world but in the other hand teaching it in a wrong way. Tsubasa reservoir chronicles a inspiration of undying love. Law of Ueki an inspiration in where we should never give up on our goals. As for Naruto inspires people to strive to be better in a goal you are trying to acheive.
well in insights of a kid they would usually just imitate it's violence so it's pretty their understanding but once they grow old and understand life they would soon realize that what the specific anime is trying to depict and how the youth of our generation should encounter it.
*sigh*

Re: Boy dies imitating Naruto
One of the definitions of Cartoon in Merriam-Webster is animated cartoon. Merriam-Webster's definition of "animated cartoon" is "a motion picture that is made from a series of drawings, computer graphics, or photographs of inanimate objects (as puppets) and that simulates movement by slight progressive changes in each frame"
Therefore an anime is technically still a cartoon.
Also, saying that Teletubbies caused an increase in gay population because it was released at the time of said increase is ridiculous. Why don't I go right now and say that drinking water makes people kill each other because statistics show that murderers have access to drinking water. And most importantly, what's wrong with being gay?
Not trying to start an argument though.
As for the boy, I feel terribly sorry for him. May his soul rest in peace.

Re: Boy dies imitating Naruto
Anime is technically a type of cartoon, but I understand why you'd feel strongly about the terminology. Note that the term "anime" in Japan actually refers to all animation from around the world (http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art4260.asp). Outside Japan, of course, we use it to almost always exclusively refer to Japanese style animation.
True, distinct talaga yung visual style ng anime compared to Western forms of animation. Though some of the stuff you pointed out are mainly connotational differences. There ARE anime with lessons targeted for children (like kodomo); some anime have fillers (ehem Naruto), and several Western cartoons have a wide age demographic (e.g. superhero stuff). Western animation is also considered an artform, especially movies produced before the advent of CG. Even to dismiss one type as "cooler" than the other is subjective; I don't think comprehensive enough yung pi-noint out mong examples. There are cool cartoons, and there are bad anime -- and vice versa.
Haha, I didn't mean to argue. I don't diss anime; I watch it myself. And non-anime stuff as well. To each his own.
With regards to the kid, my condolonces. Just don't blame it purely on the show (which I think was the intended tone of the story).

Re: Boy dies imitating Naruto
In the words of the great Maddox, if some people are stupid enough to do this, you should wonder how long they would have lived, anyway.
I agree with ronyu02. The story's tone wanted to blame the cartoon. If the clip wasn't cut like that, you would definitely hear the commentator say, "... a kid dying because of a cartoon."
I haven't watched one episode of Naruto ever. But whatever the sh*t it's about, that's why there's a parental guidance thingy at the bottom of the screen. I think the parents blame themselves partly about it, and though I really sympathize, the fact of the matter is, any kid of that particular age should know what could obviously kill and what could not.
A foot of sand. Kahit nga siguro anim na pulgadang unan lang ipatong sayo patay ka na eh. Sheesh.
